Sauna KIMONO was developed in collaboration with Case Studio for Architecture . From the very beginning, the intention was not simply to design a new sauna form, but to understand what the Baltic sauna has represented for centuries — and why it has endured.
In Lithuania, the sauna was never a luxury object. It was an essential structure — a place of cleansing, ritual, transition, and community. It was built from what was closest at hand: wood. The traditional horizontal log construction system formed a stable, rational structure shaped by climate, material knowledge, and lived experience. Its rhythm was not decorative; it was structural. Its simplicity was not aesthetic minimalism; it was necessity refined over time.
Sauna KIMONO carries this construction logic forward. The horizontal layering of timber remains visible. The structural clarity remains honest. The form is restrained and contemporary, yet deeply rooted in architectural memory. This is not folklore styling, nor a nostalgic recreation. It is a reinterpretation of a system that has proven its durability for generations.
Architecture Rooted in Sauna Tradition

Sauna KIMONO
Sauna KIMONO is designed as a long-lasting, low-maintenance architectural object, suitable for both natural landscapes and urban environments.
The structure is built from solid thermally modified timber beams — wood stabilized at high temperatures to enhance resistance to moisture, deformation, and climatic changes. Thermo wood does not require painting or additional protective treatment and develops a natural, even tone over time.
The standard façade finish is natural thermally modified timber. If required, the façade can be painted or treated to harmonize with surrounding architecture or specific environmental contexts.
The roof is crafted from stainless steel — a durable, weather-resistant material that requires no ongoing maintenance and ensures long-term performance.

Structure & Installation
The sauna is installed on screw piles or adjustable supports, which means:
– no need for massive concrete foundations
– minimal impact on the surrounding landscape
– the structure is elevated above ground level
– the risk of timber decay is eliminated
Due to its raised construction, the sauna appears to “float” above the ground, allowing natural air circulation beneath the floor and ensuring long-term structural durability.
Installation is clear and efficient, optimized for transportation and suitable for sites with more challenging terrain conditions.

Engineering Solutions
The design process was carried out in collaboration with professional sauna masters, ensuring that:
– the air supply system is optimized for an authentic sauna experience
– ventilation is designed according to traditional, time-tested principles
– even heat distribution is achieved throughout the space
Two heater options are available:
• wood-fired heater for periodic heating (standard version)
• electric heater (optional)
A large panoramic window is structurally integrated into the construction, creating a strong visual connection with the surrounding landscape.
Autonomy & Adaptability
Sauna KIMONO is designed to operate independently of developed infrastructure.
It can be installed in remote, “wild” locations — in forests, near water, on sloped terrain, or on private plots where no centralized utilities are available.
The design allows for:
– connection to a water supply
– integration of an outdoor shower
– interior lighting powered by solar panels
– operation with minimal reliance on external engineering systems
Thanks to its rational dimensions and optimized transportation concept, the sauna can be easily delivered and installed even in more challenging locations, with minimal impact on the surrounding environment.
Sauna KIMONO adapts to the landscape — not the other way around.

Architectural construction. Designed for real use.
Low-Maintenance Architecture
Sauna KIMONO is not a seasonal structure.
Thermally modified timber.
Stainless steel.
Elevated construction.
Clear engineering logic.
The proportions and interior dimensions are designed based on real sauna usage scenarios. Bench heights, distances, and seating and reclining zones are carefully calibrated according to ergonomic principles and traditional sauna practice.
Compact yet rational external dimensions maintain an optimal interior volume, ensuring efficient heat distribution and comfortable use.
It is an object designed to stand for decades — with minimal maintenance, clear proportions, and maximum functionality.
